AI Citation Audit

Someone is explaining your category to your buyers. It probably isn't you.

We asked an answer engine how a $200B vendor's product compares to its biggest competitor. Fourteen sources were cited. Eleven were the same third-party article — not the vendor's. This is what that means, and how to measure it for your own category.

What we found

A sales page and an assessment, competing for the same answer

The question was an ordinary buying question: how does this enterprise product compare to its biggest competitor? The kind a buyer asks before they ever speak to a salesperson.

Two comparison documents existed. The vendor had published a page explaining why they win. A third party had published one explaining how the two products actually differ, module by module — incident management, change and release, the configuration database, employee experience, platform maturity — including the areas where the competitor is genuinely stronger.

The engine built its answer almost entirely from the second document. Eleven of fourteen citations came from the independent assessment. Two came from the vendor's own page. The vendor's description of its own product was, in effect, a minority source in the answer its buyers were reading.

Run in September 2026. Citation sets vary between sessions and phrasings, so treat any single run as a sample — the pattern matters more than the ratio.

Why this happens

Engines cite what they can repeat without hedging

01
A sales page argues a conclusion.
"We're better" is a claim the model has no way to verify and every reason to attribute cautiously. Quoting it requires qualification, and qualified sentences are expensive in a short answer.
Low citation value
02
An assessment supplies evaluable statements.
Module-level differences, named trade-offs, and explicit concessions where a competitor leads can be lifted flat. The model doesn't have to adjudicate anything — it just reports.
High citation value
03
Conceding a weakness buys the whole answer.
The passage admitting the competitor is better is precisely what makes the rest of the document quotable. Balance isn't a cost here — it is the mechanism.
Counterintuitive
04
Nothing defends the position.
No domain authority, contract or budget holds it. It is held by whoever published the most useful account of the category, which means a competitor can take it the same way it was taken.

The method

How to run a citation audit on your own category

The point is not whether you are mentioned. It is whose words are used to describe you. That requires capturing sources, not sentiment.

What usually surfaces is not that a company is invisible. It is that the company is visible entirely through someone else's framing — and that framing was written by whoever was willing to be honest about trade-offs first.

We'll run it on your category

Three questions, both engines, every citation captured and attributed — delivered as a source map showing who currently explains your category to your buyers, and which document has to exist for that to change.
